South Africa’s biodiversity faces many pressures, including habitat loss, freshwater flow modification, overfishing, overuse of some species, pollution, climate change, biological invasions, overutilisation of rangelands, wildlife trafficking syndicates and other human activities.
The Conservation and Sustainable Use of Biodiversity White Paper was gazetted on 8 July 2022 for public comment and is still in draft form. It is broad policy document and once it is signed into law, will be used by government to amend existing legislation and/or introduce new legislation related to the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Biodiversity.
A priority action of the White Paper is to draft an action plan through which detailed implementation strategies can be developed. This document provides key elements of the content of the White Paper.
